Of the 461 animal taxa that I've found on our quarter acre, 370 (80.3%) are insects. [1]
Since insects are so small and numerous, it's not surprising that they are often not easy to identify. And although there are experts on iNat that will help identify your insects, it often takes a while.
If you can't stand the suspense, you can always send your photo to BugGuide. But no matter how long you wait or whom you ask, don't expect all of your observations to be IDed to species.
Even a good insect photo can often only be IDed to genus, and sometimes only to family, subfamily, or tribe. There are, after all, about 1000 insect families!
